Military Occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Manufactured 1906)
Variously called: BHStB/BHLB/SHS IIIc5/JDŽ 196
The series IIIc5 751–752 were two mallet - tender locomotives with three coupled axles for adhesion and rack and pinion propulsion in Bosnian gauge, procured by the Bosnian-Herzegovinian State Railways (BHStB). At the Yugoslav Railways (JDŽ) it was designated as the 196 series.
Only two of these locomotives were manufactured. The two series IIIc5 cogwheel locomotives built by Floridsdorf with the numbers 751–752 and the wheel arrangement 2zz'C n2(4v) were fake mallet locomotives in which the cogwheel drive driven by the low-pressure engine and the two running axles were located in the front drawbar frame. In adhesion mode, the two high-pressure engines worked as twin engines directly on the driving axle. The two low-pressure cylinders of the gear drive were switched on on rack sections and the locomotive worked in parallel operation.
Technical Features
The two machines with the wheel arrangement 2zz'C were spurious Mallet locomotives , in which the gear drive driven by the low -pressure engine and the two running axles were in the front drawbar frame. In adhesion mode, the two high-pressure engines acted directly as twin machines on the driving axle . The two low-pressure cylinders of the cogwheel drive were switched on on rack sections and the locomotive worked in interconnected operation . The front chassis had an inner frame, the adhesion chassis an outer frame , and the adhesion drive was via Hall cranks. The external crank disks of the gear drive also served as brake drums for the band brake . As with some machines of the predecessors IIIc5 701ff. additional blue oil firing made it easier to drive through tunnels. In line with the state of the art at the time, the locomotives were equipped with a Clench-Gölsdorf steam dryer . In contrast to the Schmidt superheater, the lower steam temperatures also allowed the use of flat slide valves on the high-pressure cylinders, but the additional third tube wall in the boiler could hardly be kept tight due to the thermal expansion of the tubes.
Operation
The maximum trailer load was a maximum of 150 tons. The locomotives transported 85 tons at 8 km/h on a 60 ‰ gradient and 120 tons at 20 km/h on a 15 ‰ gradient.
The Mallet locomotives did not work, and unwanted vibrations occurred in the gear drive. It remained with the two copies delivered in 1906 and from 1908 to 1919 another 21 replicas of the proven predecessor series IIIc5 701ff. procured.
