BHStB Series Vb6 Locomotive JDZ 191-001

Military Occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Manufactured 1893)

Variously called: BHStB/BHLB/SHS Vb6/JDŽ 191/JŽ 191

The BHStB Vb6 locomotive was a support tender locomotive in Bosnian gauge with five coupled axles and Klose steering gear. The machine was put into operation by the Bosnian-Herzegovinian State Railways (BHStB) in 1893 as Vb6 No. 61. The locomotive was given the designation JDŽ 191-001 by the Yugoslavian State Railways (JDŽ).

For the development of the areas of Bosnia and Herzegovina occupied by Austria from 1878 , narrow-gauge railways with a track width of 760 mm with steep gradients and tight curves were built. The demanding track conditions led to the development and procurement of curve-moving three-coupler machines with Klose steering axles, which were designated as the IIIa4 series .

With the Vb6, a similar but significantly larger five-coupler machine was ordered from Krauss in Linz in order to be able to operate the route over the Komar Pass as a more cost-effective adhesion railway instead of with racks . Although the test drives with 150 tons towing capacity at 45 ‰ were successful according to contemporary reports, racks were installed after the tests at the Komar Pass and the Vb6 remained a one-off.

In 1893 the Krauss plant in Linz delivered the five-coupler locomotive with a single-axle Klose support tender and Klose engine to the Bosnian-Herzegovinian State Railways (BHStB). The machine had inner cylinders, outer frames and external slide boxes for the Stephenson controls . The radial adjustment of the first and last coupled axle was carried out via the single-axle support tender. The wheels of the center axle had no wheel flanges , on the second and fourth axles they were weakened to facilitate driving through radii of up to 70 meters.

In the 1940s, the locomotive, which was designated 191-001 by the Yugoslav State Railways JDŽ, was discarded.
