BHStB Series IIa4 Locomotive JDZ 178-005 locomotive.
The vehicles of the IIa4 series were narrow- gauge tenders - locomotives of the kuk Bosnabahn (kkBB) and the Bosnian-Herzegovinian State Railways (BHStB).
Narrow-gauge railways with the so-called Bosnian gauge were built to develop the areas of Bosnia and Herzegovina occupied by Austria from 1878 . Curved locomotives with Klose steering axles were used on the demanding routes with tight curve radii . The first 34 machines were twin locomotives with single use of steam expansion and were designated as series IIIa4 . In order to improve efficiency and increase speed, the Bosnabahn and the BHStB decided to procure class IIa4 compound locomotives.
From 1895 to 1894, Krauss delivered seven IIa4 express locomotives to the BHStB in Linz , after the Bosna Railway had already received the same engine a year earlier. The machines had the wheel arrangement 1'B1' like the Orlèans type of the Staats-Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft.
At the Yugoslavian State Railways (JDŽ) the machines were designated as series 178. Most of the machines remained in operation until the 1950s. At least one example was also used on a pioneer railway in Ljubljana.
